First time Family Camping

Family eating on camping furniture

The Gray Family took an affordable break from busy everyday life and their kids loved the easy living at the campsite. Read their story here.

Despite years of going to festivals through my teens and twenties, I’d never actually been on a camping holiday. Fast forward a few years and I’m in my 30’s with three kids, and we decided to give it a go.

An Affordable Break
Like a lot of parents I am constantly juggling - running my business around the school run and the toddler's naps. My phone is never far from my hand and I feel like I have to be checking in with emails and available to reply to or chat to clients throughout the day, whilst also looking after my children. We’ve not been able to afford a family holiday and camping gave us the opportunity to have an affordable break. I put the out of office on, left everything behind and connected with the kids properly and for a sustained period of time.

A Big Hit with the Kids

And they enjoyed it so much! Two months on and the kids still talk about the friends they made, how they got to stay up late, toasting marshmallows and swimming in the sea. All the fresh air meant that they slept so much better than I anticipated and apart from one early morning with the youngest, they slept in longer than they would at home too.

My four year old daughter took great delight in setting up our home from home whilst we were away. Toys were stashed away in pockets in the tent and clothes were kept in the travel wardrobe which meant the children could be more self-sufficient and help themselves to what they needed without creating (as much) mess. The kitchen stand meant that we could store everything they needed to help set the table.

Cosy Campsite Cooking

Meals are a big part of our family life at home. All five of us eat together most evenings and we cook a big brunch at least a couple of weekends a month. I thought cooking together over a small stove would be tricky but the kitchen stand had prep areas and shelves. It was like having a mini kitchen! The picnic bench also meant the kids could help prepare food (no photos of that as I had to make sure all fingers remained in tact!) and we could all sit together without having to balance plates on our laps.

We made a chilli in advance of the holiday and froze it. It meant that it defrosted during the day as we travelled to the campsite and set up and all we needed to do was heat it up on the stove that evening and we had dinner. A more time consuming meal we enjoyed was breakfast burritos, introduced to us by our friends Emma and Tom. Lots of prepping that the kids can help with but absolutely worth it.

We are already thinking about our camping trips for 2019. More time together, fresh air, meeting new people and hopefully more swimming in the sea to look forward to.
